SEL Sudstex Permafilter®  Geotextile

The SEL Sudstex Permafilter® geotextile is a non-woven, dimpled, needle-punched geotextile that has been specifically designed for hydrocarbon pollution treatment in civil engineering applications.

The dimpled geotextile consists of a propriety blend of fibres that incorportate oleophobic (water attracting / oil repellent) and hydrophobic (oil attracting / water repellent) properties to achieve superior oil retention.

The SEL Sudstex Permafilter® geotextile is capable of retaining oil contamination ranging from daily car drip losses up to catastrophic spillages - i.e. originating from ruptured engine sumps - up to a maximum of 6 litres of oils per 10m2 of geotextile. The entrapped hydrocarbons are biodegraded by naturally occurring micro-organisms providing a self-cleansing mechanism.  Effluent discharge at maximum oil retention is 10 parts per million.

Within the SEL Source Control System the SEL Sudstex Permafilter®  Geotextile is used to encapsulate SEL Permavoid® Units where either full or part infiltration is the preferred design solution. Full infiltration within the SEL Source Control System allows the run-off from hardened areas to be retained within the site boundary and returned to the underlying water course at source.

image2The SEL Sudstex Permafilter® geotextile is particularly suited for part infiltration, or 'leaky tank solution'. This is where the permeability rates of surrounding soils are too low for full infiltration, but advantage can be taken of any infiltration available to reduce the size of attenuation tanks, even though the drainage system is connected to an off-site outfall. A further advantage is that it would therefore not be necessary to fully encapsulate attenuation tanks in welded geomembrane, thus saving cost and installation time. This solution is most appropriate where there are no limiting factors such as contamination or poor ground conditions.

Key Features

  • Captures residual hydrocarbons
  • Removes pollutants by biodegradation
  • Provides a fifth stage of water treatment within the SEL Source Control System when used for infiltration
  • Catastrophic spillages intercepted and treated at source
  • Non-specialist installation
  • Improves water quality
