Stage 3 IllustrationTreatment Stage 3 SEL Permafilter® Biomat

The SEL Permafilter® Biomat is a standard SEL Permavoid® unit (see page 7) which incorporates a floating oil absorbent mat (Biomat). The SEL Permafilter® Biomat has two main treatment features:

  1. The capture of residual hydrocarbons which escape from the SEL Permachannel® (i.e. in the event of a catastrophic spillage such as a ruptured HGV engine sump).
  2. The promotion of a self-maintaining ecosystem, with bacteria digesting the captured hydrocarbons and protozoa regulating the bacteria. The air layer above the Biomat encourages microbes to form a biofilm on top of the Biomat that use trapped hydrocarbons as a sole nutrient source, thus removing pollutants through biodegradation. As the Biomat is a floating component, the biofilm is always kept above the water level within the system preventing bacteria being flushed away during storm conditions.
